Description
Summary

With less than a decade remaining to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), sustainable development needs investment. Social, environmental, health, urban and economic challenges call for citizen-led innovative financial solutions and transformative action.

Philanthropy has championed the development of innovative finance solutions that have been successful in enabling, accelerating, and harnessing private capital markets for public good. This roundtable will bring together foundations, philanthropists and industry visionaries to examine the intersection of democracy, funding, technology and sustainable urban development.

Sub Title

Participatory Grantmaking: Democratizing philanthropy for sustainable urban development

Guiding Questions for discussions

What role can Foundations play to achieve the urban dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goal 11 to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe resilient and sustainable?    - How are Foundations working to democratize and diversify philanthropy? - What role can technology play in building more equitable giving communities? 2 / 2 - What have foundations learned from pandemic funding practices?

Philanthropy has championed the development of such innovative finance solutions that have been successful in enabling, accelerating, and harnessing private capital markets for public good. However, in recent years, there have been more calls to examine the role of technology in democratizing and diversifying philanthropy. Creating an enabling inclusive environment for increased philanthropic engagement through technology with the SDGs is crucial for ensuring sustainable and deep collaborative partnerships between philanthropic organizations, governments, the United Nations and other development partners, civil society, and business - including social enterprises.

The Foundations and Philanthropies Roundtable will bring together founders, philanthropists and industry visionaries to examine the intersection of democracy, funding, technology and sustainable urban development. The discussion will be centred around how philanthropy can unleash the power of the collective in order to drive action for equitable giving, innovation, deepen support and strengthen relationship with communities in order to build inclusive safe resilient cities that minimize harm the environment and improve the quality of life for all, particularly the most vulnerable.
