The United Nations Department of Global Communications organized event entitled "Beyond Colonial Histories. Keynote lecture by Bryan Stevenson & Panel Discussion about Museums and the Transatlantic Slave Trade" at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 30 March 2023.

Opening remarks were delivered by Melissa Fleming, Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications. The keynote lecture was presented by Bryan Stevenson, Founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative. The panel discussion that followed is part of the official programming of the exhibition "Slavery: Ten True Stories on Dutch Colonial Slavery" which was on view at the UN Headquarters in New York. The moderated discussion focused on the history of slavery and highlighted current efforts by museums to include the voices of people of African descent; the importance and focus of ongoing research; inclusive programming; and dealing with the colonial past. The closing remarks were delivered by Chef de cabinet for the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Courtenay Rattray.  

This event was organized by the UN Department of Global Communication in collaboration with the Rijksmuseum and supported by the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations and the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in New York.
