(2nd meeting) 2024 Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations
The joint UN-IPU Parliamentary Hearing typically attracts an audience of 200 parliamentarians from all regions of the world and from both government and opposition parties. The hearings have helped to articulate a parliamentary perspective on UN negotiated agreements. Recent hearings have taken place on the world drug problem, oceans, migration, multilateralism, education, corruption, and recovery from the Covid-induced economic crisis.
The joint Parliamentary Hearing can raise awareness of a major UN process and prepare the parliamentary community to play a role in the implementation of the final agreement. Parliamentary Hearings help garner a general sense of where parliamentarians stand on the various aspects of an issue that is high on the UN agenda while also giving parliamentarians an opportunity to interact with their ambassadors to the UN and UN officials.
