The Rome Statute bestows upon the International Criminal Court (ICC) jurisdiction the broadest range of sexual and gender-based crimes (SGBC) of any judicial body in the history of international criminal law (ICL). In spite of this potential, the Court's record in adjudicating for SGBC is mixed.

Since taking office in 2021, the ICC Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan KC has emphasised his deep commitment to strengthening his Office's investigation and prosecution of crimes against and affecting children. The development, updating, and implementation of strong, clear policies is critical to success in this work. In December 2022, the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) launched its new Policy Paper on Gender Persecution.

Digital public goods are changing the way international criminal law is disseminated, studied and consulted around the world. The Digital Public Goods Alliance has already certified a publisher that specializes in international criminal law (the Torkel Opsahl Academic EPublisher ('TOAEP')) and the leading e-learning platform in the field (Lexsitus), both built onto the award-winning ICC Legal Tools Database ('LTD').

This International Justice Day not only marks the 25th anniversary of the Rome Statute, but also the 5th anniversary of the activation of the ICC's jurisdiction over the crime of aggression. These joint anniversaries are an occasion to reaffirm our collective commitment to the principles of justice and the rule of law – principles at the foundation of the International Criminal Court and the United Nations.
