This session is part of the road to the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States "Charting the Course Toward Resilient Prosperity" that will take place on 27-30 May 2024 in Antigua and Barbuda.

At this event experts will present the findings of a new report titled "A Framework For Tomorrow's Pathogen Research." The report comes from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists' Independent Task Force on Research with Pandemic Risks and will discuss the benefits and risks of a subset of research that could plausibly source a large outbreak, or even a pandemic, and offer recommendations to make research with pandemic risks more safe, secure, and responsible.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought into sharp focus the risk of major disease outbreaks. Not only did it highlight countries' lack of preparedness to address such outbreaks, but also underlined the risks of mis and dis information. In the midst of the high-level meetings on health and pandemic preparedness, this session will explore lessons learnt from the recent COVID-19 pandemic, how to prepare for future crises, and how to properly manage information on these key topics.

Recent events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, compounding crises and more, have contributed to a rise in mental health concerns and conditions globally, especially among young people. This session will highlight the challenges young people face relating to mental health and explore solutions for promoting positive change and providing support.

By May 2023, over 110 million were forcibly displaced from home by war, persecution, violence or human rights violations. An estimated 41% of whom are children, under the age of 18 - though they account for only 30% of the world's population. Many refugee children live in protracted crises, and even before the COVID-19 pandemic, roughly half were not in school.
